THREE most common skin problems caused by diabetes
Read these simple steps on how to prevent or treat some common skin issues that are brought upon by diabetes.
For people with diabetes, having too much glucose (sugar) in their blood for a long time can cause major issues, including skin problems. The good news is, if treated properly and early enough it may be an easy fix. It is known that a third of people with diabetes will have some sort of skin issue at some point in their life.
Here are 3 of the most common skin issues and how to avoid them:
Bacterial Infections: Including styes in the eyes, boils and nail infections. For styes make sure your hand are always clean when touching your eyes. Don’t share make-up with anyone. Be careful with the face washes that you use by purchasing good skin care products; some which have fewer chemicals in them. Treatment with anti-biotic will usually cure any bacterial infection. With nail infections make sure to not cut your nails too short as you may cause an ingrown nail and cause infection.
Itching: Itchy skin can have many causes. It can be caused by poor circulation, and dry skin. When the issue is poor blood circulation the lower legs may be the itchiest part of the body. In this case, consider using soap that is organic or very mild. Bathe less often because bathing frequent can cause dry skin. Consider getting some thick and creamy lotion and don’t be afraid to repeat a couple times a day. There are many diabetes skin care products to choose from.
Fungal Infections:
Fungal infections are also one of the most common skin problems people with diabetes have. Because high glucose levels in the blood can increase the risk of fungal infections, one of the most basic ways to avoid them is by checking your blood sugar regularly. Another is to avoid very hot baths. Fungus loves moisture and heat. Wash minor cuts with soap and water. Changing your socks and under garments everyday will also help. If you get cut or have a wound treat it immediately. And of course, getting your skin checked our by a doctor regularly can ensure less of a chance to have any fungal infections.
These are only three common skin issues. There are many more. Once you notice any skin problem call your doctor immediately so anything potentially serious can be avoided.
